‘People smile and tell me, I'm the lucky one, And we've just begun, think I'm gonna have a son. He will be like she and me as free as a dove, Conceived in love, sun is gonna shine above...’
So I just heard that today is #NationalSonsDay, and all parents of multiple children know what you do for one you must do for the other (and subsequent). But really, there’s no ‘must’ about it. I’m happy to share about them any chance I get.
Having a son is really cool. I remember feeling like I had no idea how to parent a boy when I found out I’d have one. For three and a half years, his sister was all I knew. But when he was placed into my arms, all that doubt melted away. My son stole my heart forever the moment I first looked at his face. True story.
He’s a lot like me. He’s sensitive and he’s a nurturer. He loves to read and talk about details of things that others may never notice. He’s strong-willed, but in a ‘Justice for all and not just me’ sort of way that I admire a lot. If something seems unfair, he will tell you. And even if it feels relentless, his commitment to keeping things on the up and up makes me really proud.
My son has several nicknames, but the one that is the most predominant is Pup. I started calling him this when he was a baby because every time I’d kiss the soft blond hair on his head I thought he smelled like a puppy. I’d sniff him all the time and marvel at how that scent clung to him. It has always been so soothing to me. And when he climbs into my lap, like he had in this picture from about two weeks ago, of course I breathed my puppy in and felt so grateful for the chance to mother him. He’s really special and completes our family in just the right way.
Oh, how I love this boy... ♥️
